Working across painting, photography, screen printing, sign painting, sculpture, and artifact assemblage, Ron Copeland gathers found materials from secondhand shops, industrial sites, decommissioned museum and sign shop materials, transforming them into illuminated works and layered constructions that blur the boundaries between documentation and imagination. Removed from their original contexts, these objects become visual poems of personal recollection and collective cultural memory.

The works and installations in this exhibit approach memory not as a fixed archive but as a living process incomplete, layered, and continually rewritten by time. Words are partially obscured, surfaces bear the marks of repair and weather, and traces of earlier histories remain visible resurfacing over time from beneath newer additions. Like memory itself, each work reveals and conceals, inviting viewers to assemble meaning from what persists and what has been lost.

Drawing from a lifelong fascination with signs, typography, and the changing built environment, Copeland treats the eroded visual language of the American landscape as both artifact and metaphor. Every letterform, fragment of painted metal, and worn surface becomes a syllable in a larger conversation about memory, place, resilience, impermanence, and belonging.

Rather than preserving the past through nostalgia alone, Casual Recollections considers how the places we inhabit shape our identities and how ordinary objects become vessels for shared experience. These works exist in the space where past and present converge, forming an evolving archive of place-based memory that honors the handmade, the weathered, and the repurposed while inviting viewers to recognize their own histories reflected back to them from within its layered surfaces.
